Guidelines

YMA's Concerto & Aria Competition is open to all students enrolled at First Session. Applicants must perform a solo on one of the instruments taught at YMA (voice, cello, clarinet, marimba, trombone, guitar, piano, etc.), but it needn't be the same program in which the student is enrolled. For example, if you register as a violinist but also play the piano and saxophone, you are welcome to enter the competition on any of those instruments. Students may be selected multiple years but may only perform a concerto on one instrument each year.

Students who wish to be considered should submit their recordings prior to March 30th as outlined below. Two to four students will be chosen to perform the last week of Session One as soloists with YMA's Spotlight Orchestra.

How to Enter

  1. Register for Session 1; you may attend Session 2 as well but must be enrolled in First Session

  2. Contact Galen at galen@ymaarts.org about potential repertoire

  3. Submit your recording to Galen at galen@ymaarts.org by March 30th

Recording Guidelines

Recordings are due March 30th and should include piano accompaniment. Memorization is encouraged but not required.

Contact galen@ymaarts.org for details on submitting recordings.

Repertoire

Participants may perform complete works or single movements, but total timing should be under 12 minutes. Orchestral accompaniment parts must be readily available. If needed, YMA will purchase the full orchestral arrangement up to $200. The student’s family will be responsible for any costs beyond the $200. YMA will assist with setting up a fundraising campaign if desired. Please make sure you email Galen at galen@ymaarts.org with your desired repertoire early on to get it approved before you learn it!
